Summer 2020

This place is cool. We’ve driven by and through this place a number of times and we were really excited to choose Morrison Rockwood State Park for our weekend.

We’d booked our site a couple of weeks in advance for what we assumed would be a beautiful summer weekend. On our way up, the weather reports were coming in and our friends and family had been sending us messages all day about the impending storm.

Throwing caution to the wind, we were still going. We had a roof and food. What else do you really need?  Friday evening we arrived and set up. The lots here are all tree covered and spacious in the loop that we were in. Our yard was a bit of a hill right outside our camper door but we made it work. Our camper backed up to the timber, which provided an entire night of entertainment for the boys.

What’s to eat?

For dinner, we cooked some weenies over the fire and made it easy by having chips with some homemade ranch dip. Right after dinner we had just enough time to relax a bit and make some smores before we had to pack up and get inside before the rain came.

What’s to do?

Turns out, the weather reports were correct. It rained the entire weekend that we were there. What do you do with 3 teenagers in a camper on a rainy day? Most people would say that you play board games and cards. Most people are right! And any other time we would’ve done just that. But this particular rainy day we were just tired. All of us.

We watched a DVD, made some biscuits and gravy, and watched another DVD. It was fantastic. I don’t remember the last time that we took a rainy day and just – rested. Well, rested as much as you can while still making sure everyone had what they needed. For lunch I made a few different appetizers and after that we had some renewed energy to venture out and take a look around the campground.

What we saw was beautiful – even in the rain. It’s just a really nice place. The lake was peaceful and definitely a place we said that we’d return to. Plans were made to return next summer with kayaks and fishing gear and really experience it. There’s even a little snack shop down by the lake if you didn’t come fully stocked with food.

The rain still poured down and we cruised the loops of all of the camping spots. This is a usual for us. We’ve been compiling a list of sites that we like and don’t like for each campground that we visit so that next time we can easily choose a spot that offers the features that we’re looking for. That list is ultra useful when booking spots online through reserveamerica.com.

Next, we took a trip into Morrison to make a stop at Sullivans Foods and see what sorts of items we could find there that we didn’t see at home. To the kids, this meant that they were in range of cell service for a while. It was a win-win. Truly.

After our trip to town, we came back to the campground and returned to movie watching and snacking for the rest of the afternoon and evening. Our trip to Morrison Rockwood State Park was exactly the trip that we didn’t know we needed 🙂
